Understanding a Low Vision Exam

Welcome to Low Vision Palm Springs. A low vision examination is not like any eye examination you’ve been to. First of all I don’t dilate your eyes. My focus is really on understanding what level of visual you have and finding ways to take that vision and enhance it. I use very specialized prescription devices to facilitate this.

The most important component to the low vision examination is listening to what you want to do that you can’t already. I call that your “wish list”. If it’s reading the newspaper, seeing the road signs when driving, being able to read the closed captions on tv or just recognizing neighbors who wave when walking the neighborhood.

I will ask you to bring the things with you that you’d like help seeing.  Bring your newspaper, your bible, your knitting, your crafts or hobbies.  I want to help you see the things that are important to you.

If you want to continue driving bring your current driving glasses. I am well versed on the driving regulations and will let you know before you leave whether we can meet DMV regulations and what can be done to facilitate safer driving for you

I will test your vision with  specialized low vision  glasses.  Before we order any low vision glasses I’ll demonstrate to  ensure they help improve your vision. Lighting is important and I will review this with you as well as what types of lighting is best. We will discuss other aids such as CCTV’s, wearable electronic magnifiers and portable aids are appropriate. I will review this as well.

I love helping people with low vision and have designed my practice with that in mind.  If you struggle with your vision due to macular degeneration, stargardt’s disease, diabetes, optic atrophy, glaucoma or some other condition give me a call.  There is no charge for the telephone consultation.

Our Goal

To restore the ability to perform the tasks you'd like to do but can't due to vision loss.
